Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has escaped punishment for an alleged elbow on Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye.

Toon boss Alan Pardew has urged the FA to take action following his side’s 3-0 defeat at St James’ Park, though his own player, Cheick Tiote, is another who could of faced action, for what looked like a stamp on Tom Cleverley, but will not be charged.

Van Persie had already taken the corner that set up Jonny Evans to open the scoring, but Pardew was sure the new Manchester United signing should have seen red afterwards in his altercation with Cabaye.

“He has looked at Yohan and he has elbowed him. I think that perhaps needs to be looked at, if I am honest,” Pardew told the BBC.

“Yohan wouldn't have gone down if he [Van Persie] hadn't done something.”

Referee Howard Webb did not see the incident at the time, but reviewed footage after the game and was convinced Van Persie had not committed violent conduct, meaning the FA cannot take retrospective action against the Dutchman.

Manchester United moved up to second in the table following the win – a complete reverse of the scoreline when Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were humbled there last season.
