Atletico Madrid general manager Miguel Angel Gil Marin has confirmed that Radamel Falcao won’t leave the Spanish club until the end of the season at the earliest – but admits his €60 million sale would rid the debt-laden club of much of their financial problems.

Falcao has established himself as one of the most feared strikers in Europe, with Atletico president Enrique Cerezo insisting that he would not swap the Colombian hitman for superstars Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo if he had the chance.

Despite their hopes of keeping hold of Falcao, Madrid are believed to be in huge financial trouble, and owe around €115 million to Spanish tax authorities. They have also had prize money withheld by UEFA in September because of a failure to pay transfer debts or clear their tax bill sufficiently.

However Gil Marin says he is under no pressure to sell Falcao to either Chelsea, Manchester City or Arsenal in January, even if it would help ease the club’s financial pain.

“Falcao will carry on here, certainly until the end of the season. He will be staying and everyone else the Coach wants to stay will also do so,” he said.

“We are striving to perform a miracle, which is what we are doing with the resources we have available.

“In Europe there are 50 clubs with higher earnings than us and if we sold Falcao for €60m then yes it would solve our debts.

“If Atletico don’t get into the Champions League or we can’t afford to pay Falcao then I don’t think even Real Madrid could cover that.”

Both Chelsea and Manchester City have been linked with a move for the former Porto striker, who has also attracted reported interest from Arsenal.

While the Gunners may not be able to afford Falcao’s reported release-clause fee, both Chelsea and Manchester city have the financial clout to do just that.

Chelsea have been heavily linked with making a move for another striker in Januaray given the fact that boss Roberto di Matteo can only call upon Fernando Torres and Daniel Sturridge to lead the line at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester City meanwhile have no shortage of firepower but manager Roberto Mancini was present to see Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Malaga on Sunday, reportedly to run the rule over Falcao, something he has since denied.
