Manchester United legend Roy Keane is reportedly in the frame to fill the vacant managerial post at the Old Trafford club’s neighbours, Bolton Wanderers.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s former captain is one of the first names to have been mentioned since Owen Coyle was sacked today – the Daily Telegraph reported the former Red Devil was being considered for the post yesterday, as well as former Wolves boss Mick McCarthy.

Keane has had mixed fortunes in his managerial career since leaving Manchester United; he took Sunderland to the top of the Championship and Premier League promotion, but failed to inspire during two years at Ipswich Town.

Keane won seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and one Champions League title in his 12 years at Manchester United, but could not spur his Sunderland charges on in the top flight as he did with his team-mates while patrolling the Old Trafford midfield.

Incidentally, he stepped down as Black Cats’ manager just a week after losing 4-1 to prospective employers Bolton.

Keane had also been linked with the job at Turkish club Kasimpasa, but turned down the offer due to the wishes of his family.
