Ferguson finds a Manchester United midfield diamond
Manchester United news: Sir Alex Ferguson's diamond formation could bring the Premier League title
Sir Alex Ferguson believes he has come across a diamond that could bring Manchester United the Premier League title this season.
The formation has sparkled in the Capital One Cup against Newcastle, away to Cluj in the Champions League, and in Sunday's 3-0 Premier League win at St James' Park.
Alan Pardew's Magpies simply could not get the ball off the Red Devils, as Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Shinji Kagawa, and Wayne Rooney - at the point of the diamond - interchanged short passes, to blow the hosts away in 15 first half minutes.
The hat-trick of wins has come with four players in the centre of midfield, squeezing the play and pressing opposition, which has allowed Rooney to shine behind a forward line, led by summer signing Robin van Persie.
Asked about the change in system, Ferguson is quoted in The Sun: "We took a gamble because Newcastle are so big up front and they're good crossers of the ball.
"But the football we played from the central midfield positions through Cleverley, Kagawa, Rooney and Carrick was terrific.
"People look at the name Cluj and say they expect United to win but they are a decent side. And because we played so well I thought we should find out how far we can go with that diamond system."
Manchester United's run has been temporarily halted, thanks to the international break with upcoming World Cup qualifiers, but the Premier League giants are back in action when Stoke City visit Old Trafford on October 20.
