Arsenal are reportedly ready to rival Manchester City for the signing of Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic, as Arsene Wenger looks to reinforce his striking department in January.

The Gunners manager is keen to add further firepower to his side and help to relieve some of the pressure on new signing Olivier Giroud, according to the Daily Mail.

The Serie A star has been linked with a move to Manchester City on a number of occasions this summer, but the report claims Arsenal scouts have been watching the Montenegro star for the past year.

Italian champions Juventus were also credited with an interest, but recently publicly ended their pursuit of the 22-year-old, reportedly giving Manchester City a free run to sign him.

The report also claims that Wenger is planning to try and replace former Arsenal captain Robin van Persie and wants to use a transfer kitty worth around £35million to bring another goalscorer to Emirates Stadium.

Van Persie was sold to Manchester United in the summer for £24million after refusing to sign a new deal at the club and the report says Wenger has accepted the current Arsenal strikeforce has failed to sufficiently replace the Dutchman’s goals.

Giroud has struggled to fill Van Persie’s mantle and has only managed to score one Premier League goal so far this season, but the report claims Wenger always intended the France international to only be a part of the forward line.

A lack of Premier League experience also means Giroud cannot be expected to spearhead the attack fully straight away, though his performances have improved steadily.

Wenger has used Gervinho in the centre forward role to intermittent success, Lukas Podolski can perform that role, but Wenger appears to prefer him in a wider role and Theo Walcott has publicly stated his desire to get a chance there, though he has rarely been used in the position while at Arsenal.
