Holland legend Ronald de Boer says Robin van Persie made the right choice in leaving Arsenal for Manchester United.
Van Persie was the Gunners’ top scorer and captain last season, but refused to sign a new contract with his deal only having a year left to run, prompting the Emirates Stadium club to accept a £24million bid out of Old Trafford.
It was a move that did not please the Arsenal faithful, but Manchester United have already seen the benefits of Van Persie’s incredible form over the past two years, with his goals already directly winning games for them (Southampton and CFR Cluj).
Despite his quality and the pedigree of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, many people wondered if it was the right move at the right price for both player and club.
De Boer has no such qualms and was adamant that the move north to Manchester United will be good for the 29-year-old and could possibly make him the best in the world.
“It was the right choice at the right moment for Van Persie,” he said in an interview with talkSPORT.
“He had been at Arsenal for a long time and done everything, but didn’t really get the prizes and with Manchester United he has more chance to win silverware.
“It’s great for his career mentally, because he has to prove himself again and that will improve his game.
“I see him as potentially one of the best players in the world and it’s time for him to show it. And with this club he can do it.”
There is even an argument for saying the move has turned out well for both clubs, as Arsenal have looked far more solid and balanced this season, as well as spreading the goals more evenly around the squad – ten different players have notched for the Gunners this season.
Ferguson will also be rubbing his hands together at the sight of his new signing and Wayne Rooney gelling well on the pitch, possibly giving Manchester United the most potent striker partnership in the Premier League.
