Manchester United and Chelsea transfer target Lucas Digne has welcomed interest from the Premier League, and is eager to make his mark for the French Under 21s after being called-up for a double-header against Norway.
The 19-year-old full-back has rapidly risen through the ranks at Lille after making a competitive debut in October 2011, and reports in The Daily Mail last week claimed both the Blues and Red Devils are keeping tabs on the player.
It’s news that appears to have filtered through to Digne, and whilst he’s keeping his feet on the ground at the Grand Stade Lille Metropole, he’s happy to hear that top Premier League clubs are being linked.
"I am naturally very pleased to have been named (in the French U21 and squad), and welcome the very words that the announcement of the selection is followed in Britain (Manchester United and Chelsea),” he’s quoted as saying on Sport24.com at the weekend.
“My goal was to confront the next level. I am very happy that I can be offered that today. Even if I do not realise it yet, I go without pressure, but with the desire to make a place for me.”
Last week’s speculation claimed Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was considering Digne as a possible replacement for French veteran Patrice Evra.
The Red Devils have already drafted in Alexander Buttner to provide the 31-year-old with some competition at Old Trafford, and England international Leighton Baines has also been linked with a move.
Digne would very much be a signing for the future, much like Nick Powell in the summer, and his impact could be felt years after Ferguson leaves his post as Manchester United manager.
Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo is also looking at his left-back options, with Ashley Cole’s contract rapidly running down at Stamford Bridge.
Whilst Ryan Bertrand is another option, the Italian manager has been eager to play the England youngster in a more advanced role for the Blues – a point proved with his start in last season’s Champions League final.
That could open the door to a new addition in the position, and with talkSPORT also highlighting the player on Chelsea transfer radar, interest in January could be high.
