Liverpool could be ready to offer midfielder Josip Ilicic a route out of Palermo's disappointing season, according to Calcio Mercato.

The 24-year-old Slovenian international has established himself as one of the Italian outfit's key performers, but has suffered - along with the rest of the team - in Serie A this season.

Palermo have picked up just five points from their first seven games, and sit precariously one place above the drop zone. But, rather than face a possible slog against relegation, Ilicic might have the opportunity to leave Italy for England, with a move to Liverpool in the January transfer window.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is known to have scouted the midfielder recently, taking in his performance as Palermo met Genoa, along with that of Rossoblu defender Andreas Granqvist.

The Swedish stopper was quick to express how flattered he was to be linked with Anfield, and Ilicic is likely to be similarly welcoming of such speculation.

However, with a contract at Stadio Renzo Barbera until 2016, Palermo will be in the driving seat when the transfer window reopens, if Liverpool firm up their interest in the former Maribor star.
