Arsene Wenger is reportedly planning to afford Jack Wilshere the opportunity to play his first competitive match for Arsenal in almost a year-and-a-half in the Capital One Cup encounter with Reading in two weeks.

The Arsenal midfielder has not featured for the club in the Premier League since the 2-2 draw with Fulham in May 2011, with a succession of injuries forcing the 20-year-old to miss the entirety of last season.

Wilshere returned to Arsenal action on October 1 when he completed an hour in an under-21 encounter with West Brom, while he played 74 minutes against Reading under-21 a week later.

The England international will next player in a behind-closed doors friendly - specifically arranged to aid his rehabilitation - against Chelsea this week before, according to Goal.com, returning to the first-team on October 30.

Wilshere is reported to be suffering no psychological issues despite his long spell on the treatment table, and has been 'throwing himself into' tackles in training with the likes of Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta.

The return of the Arsenal starlet will also serve as positive news for England manager Roy Hodgson, who has been unable to consider Wilshere for selection since succeeding Fabio Capello as national team boss.
