Mourinho: Essien has settled better than Modric

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho believes recent signing Luka Modric should be given time to settle at the Santiago Bernabeu, as he learns the team's style of play.

The former Tottenham midfielder is yet to complete a full 90minutes for his new club, and was an unused substitute in the recent 2-2 El Clasico draw with Barcelona.

Much was expected of Modric following his £29million move from White Hart Lane this summer, but despite the Croatian international's limited game time, Mourinho is confident he will be a success in Spain.

"People should be calm, especially with Luka," the Portuguese tactician is quoted by ESPN. "We know he is a great player, but let him grow within the team. People wanted him to play against Barcelona.

"He needs to enhance his tactical play and learn what he is expected to do inside the team, and how to position himself among his mates, what to do when Benzema presses one of their midfielders and what to do when Cristiano is free.

"There are many things he has to learn to do as a team member, which some people ignore and some others know but pretend they do not. Let the kid alone, let him grow within the team little by little.

"He is a terrific player. I believe that the Bernabeu fans have already had a taste of what a great player he is, but now leave him alone."

Meanwhile, another player that has settled more quickly into his new surroundings is Chelsea loanee Michael Essien - the Ghanaian international put pen to paper on a temporary deal that saw him reunited with the man that coached him at Stamford Bridge.

And, it is that fact alone which forms the basis of Mourinho's belief behind why the Blues ace has made an immediate impact in Spain.

"Michael is different," he added. "He has been my player for three years. He knows practically all about football and his coach. His position on the field is more stable, so it is easier for Michael to come into the team."
