Manchester City are reportedly planning a £60 million summer offer for Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets which, if completed, would break the record fee paid by a British club.

Chelsea hold the current record for the £50 million they spent on Fernando Torres when he moved to London from Liverpool in 2011, and City could yet trump that figure in the summer transfer window.

According to the Daily Star, Manchester City are ready to make Busquets their No.1 target next year and are willing to pay £60 million in order to lure him away from the Camp Nou.

The 24-year-old Spain international is reportedly unhappy at Barcelona after Alex Song was recruited from Arsenal to provide competition in Tito Vilanova's midfield.

Barcelona, however, may be unlikely to entertain an offer for Busquets and will perhaps point Roberto Mancini towards the player's £121 million release clause.

The signing of Busquets could well compensate for the potential departure of Yaya Toure next summer, after the Ivorian's agent said the midfielder wants to leave Manchester City.

Toure has supposedly achieved all he can as a City player, while his agent invited bids from the likes of Bayern Munich and Chelsea.
