Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson believes Anfield’s young stars can take the Reds back into the top four this season.
The £20million signing from Sunderland has not had the best of times since making his move to Merseyside, but Brendan Rodgers has shown a willingness to integrate unproven youth into his first team and Henderson could well get another chance.
Liverpool’s new boss has already given opportunities to young talents like Raheem Sterling, Suso, Andre Wisdom and Jonjo Shelvey – the latter has even been given a call up to the England squad.
Henderson says having so much exciting youth in the first team bodes well for the future, but insisted that people should not dismiss them returning Liverpool to the Premier League’s upper echelons sooner rather than later.
“It is a very young team, but that is a good thing for us, and for the future," he told the official Liverpool website.
“But we aren't just looking at the future, this team and these players are ready now, and I think they have shown that over the last few weeks.
“The younger lads that have come through have been brilliant. Whenever they've played they have done really well. Hopefully they will keep working hard and keep improving themselves.”
It has not worked so well so far, as Liverpool have only won once this season in the Premier League, but there have been encouraging signs amongst the younger players.
One obstacle the Rodgers’ side need to get over is the lack of a win at Anfield in the league so far, and they will have the chance to do so when Reading arrive at the weekend in their next fixture.
