Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has lavished praise on young forward Joshua King, saying he expects him to achieve big things.

The 20-year-old scored his first senior goal for Norway this week and the Old Trafford boss admitted he has been impressed with the young forward’s progress this season, especially after a loan spell with mixed fortunes at Borussia Monchengladbach last term.

“Joshua King has done very well,” Ferguson is quoted as saying on the official Manchester United website.

“We get mixed fortunes when players go on loan – Federico Macheda had a nightmare twice when he went to Sampdoria and then QPR with a change of manager just as he arrived.

“And then, with Josh, he didn’t play much at Mönchengladbach last year and came back to us.”

While Ferguson admitted sending young players out on loan can have an adverse effect on their development, he claimed King showed the correct attitude to put it behind him and had worked hard since returning to Manchester United in the summer, which now appears to be paying off.

“He did really well in pre-season and has been working really hard. He’s shown he has good ability,” added the Scot.

“He won the penalty for Norway and scored the third goal and that’s bound to have given him a boost.”

King is not the first young striker to be tipped for big things at the Red Devils, Ferguson’s mention of Macheda is a case in point, and there is no guarantee that he will make the necessary grade to succeed at Manchester United.

However, Ferguson was enthusiastic about King’s abilities and seemed confident they would take him to success in his career.

“He’s very quick with a great physique and he should have a good career,” he stated.

King has a formidable task breaking into the Old Trafford first team, as Ferguson has a potent attacking force at his disposal in the form of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and, one whom has made the step up successfully, Danny Welbeck.
