Premier League rivals chase Italian starlet

Published 1 Comments

Manchester United and Chelsea are both scouting young Italian defender Mario Sampirisi, according to talkSPORT.

Quoting reports in Italy, talkSPORT reports that United and Chelsea are both keen on the Italy youth international, who has earned rave reviews in Serie ‘A’ since swapping AC Milan for Genoa last summer.

The 20-year-old centre-back has featured for Italy under-19 and under-20, and has started six of Genoa’s last seven league fixtures in Serie ‘A’ this season.

Sampirisi is rated at £800,000, and is highly regarded in Italy, leading to interest from United and Chelsea among others.

The report claims Genoa are likely to drive up the price for Sampirisi if either of the Premier League title rivals firm up their interest with a formal bid, but Chelsea and Manchester United are only scouting the defender at this stage.

The two clubs are expected to send club scouts to Italy to watch Genoa’s home fixture against Roma today in order to get a clearer indication of his talents, with a view to a possible bid further down the line.

But with both Chelsea and United interested, a move from one club could prompt the other into showing their hand, driving up the Genoa defender’s price past the £800,000 valuation.
