Wilshere inspires Arsenal U21s victory
Jack Wilshere closer to Arsenal first team return – stars in 2-1 win over Everton U21s
Jack Wilshere took another step towards a first-team return at Arsenal, helping the U21s to a 2-1 away victory over Everton U21s at Finch Farm.
The England international midfielder was included in the Gunners’ matchday squad for the clash against Norwich City on Saturday, but watched from the sidelines as the Canaries inflicted a surprise 1-0 defeat on Arsene Wenger’s men at Carrow Road.
Not yet back to 100%, the 20-year-old played 90 minutes against the Toffees today in an effort to prove his fitness to the manager, setting-up one goal and picking up a yellow card for his troubles.
Arsenal fell behind to a goal from Apostolos Vellios after just five minutes, but hit back seven minutes later when Thomas Eisfeld finished a Jernade Meade cross. Wilshere had played in the left-back.
Wilshere was again at the heart of Arsenal’s 34th minute goal, cutting inside from the right hand side before slipping the ball to Eisfeld, who doubled his tally.
The score would remain 2-1, but there was still time for the touch-tackling midfielder to pick up a yellow card, booked for a sliding tackle on Francisco Junior with just six minutes remaining on the clock.
The caution is unlikely to worry Wilshere however, with the academy graduate now featuring in three matches for the second-string since returning from the knee and ankle injuries.
