£20m Liverpool midfield target reveals Manchester City snub
Liverpool and Manchester City transfer news: Ajax starlet Christian Eriksen turned down Citizens
Ajax starlet Christian Eriksen has revealed he turned down the chance to sign for Manchester City over the summer, and only contemplated the move for ‘about 10 seconds’.
Eriksen has established himself a reputation as one of the finest prospects in Europe having earned himself a regular spot in the Ajax first team, and impressed for the Dutch club in their narrow Europa League defeat against Manchester United last term.
However Eriksen recently revealed he wasn’t interested in a move to Anfield any time soon and would stay put until the end of the season at the earliest.
The Merseyside club were said to have been keen on snapping up the talented youngster as a long-term successor to Steven Gerrard, with boss Brendan Rodgers reportedly sending scouts to watch him in action.
Now reports in Denmark claim he had the chance to join Manchester City, who met with his agent Martin Schoot in July last year.
Citizens boss Roberto Mancini also reportedly invited the talented youngster to his holiday home in Sardina to discuss a potential move to the Etihad Stadium.
But according to Schoot the idea of Eriksen leaving Ajax was never a possibility, and that he had no interest in the financial rewards Manchester City were offering.
"He's not interested in money," Schoot told De Telegraff.
"He choose [to stay] for his development and because of that he's at Ajax. He's got a excellent relationship with Frank de Boer and he's enjoying himself in Amsterdam."
"Christian didn't think about it [the offer from Manchester City] for longer then 10 seconds."
Manchester City will have the chance to see Eriksen close up when they go up against Ajax in Amsterdam on Wednesday as the Champions League gets back under way.
