Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra will be rested ahead of the Premier League trip to Chelsea this weekend.

Ashley Young has been out since August and could play some part against Braga, while the likes of Chris Smalling and Nemanja Vidic still remain unavailable.

Braga are without injured Douglao, Djamal and Paulo Cesar, while Ismaily and Ruben Amorim were subjects of late fitness tests.

The Portuguese side could also be without winger Alan, who may not recover in time having only just returned to training following an injury.

Ferguson ready to make history

Manchester United Sir Alex Ferguson says he is prepared to upset the history of the club by abandoning his penchant for wingers to adopt a midfield diamond formation.

Ferguson has always been and advocate of formations utilising traditional wingers, but has been willing to experiment this season following the acquisition of Shinji Kagawa and Tom Cleverley.

And, speaking ahead of Manchester United's Champions League encounter with Braga, Ferguson said he is ready to operate with a diamond full-time in order to draw the best out of his star players.

"If it turns out we play the diamond consistently it would be revolutionary because it is going against our history," he explained.

"But the level of the game in England and Europe now is so high that making yourself unpredictable is going to be a strength.

"Teams will have to think if we are going to use two out wide or the diamond because we have players capable of doing both things.

"Kagawa and Cleverley can play really well in the type of game that a diamond offers, whilst in Nani, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia we have very good wide players."
