Frank Lampard is a major doubt for Chelsea’s top of the table clash against Manchester United this weekend.

The Blues midfielder was making his 100th appearance in Europe for the Stamford Bridge club, a record amount, but only managed to last 18 minutes before he suffered a recurrence of the calf injury that kept him out of England’s recent world cup qualifiers.

It was further punishment on a miserable evening for the west Londoners as they were beaten 2-1 by Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, leaving some doubt over whether they can get out of their Champions League group.

Chelsea manager Roberto di Matteo admitted he was unsure as to whether the 34-year-old would make the crucial game against the side that are sitting four points behind them in second.

Di Matteo denied there was an oversight from Chelsea medical staff due to the injury being an old one, claiming there had been no indicators leading up to the match that anything was amiss.

“He was training with us fine and there were no alarm bells before the game – he was in a good condition to play,” said the Italian after the defeat.

“We have to wait until we have a scan tomorrow to assess the extent of his injury.”

Chelsea currently sit at the summit of the Premier League unbeaten and could extend the gap between them and Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to seven points if they are victorious at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
