Reina: Liverpool defensive pair can emulate Istanbul heroes

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina says the Anfield club have the next Champions League winning defence in the making.

The Spaniard believes that, now they have both signed long term contract extensions, Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger could go on to become the most effective Reds central defensive partnership since Sami Hyypia and Jamie Carragher.

Carragher and Hyypia were the pairing during Liverpool’s memorable Champions League winning run in 2005 and Reina already views the current centre-back duo as one of the best in England.

“It's good they've signed contracts because it's a fact that they are one of the best centre-back couples in the Premier League," he told the official Liverpool website.

"The understanding between them is great and they've been really solid lately. In the last year and a half or so they have been brilliant for us.

"I don't see any reason why they can't do the same as Carra and Sami did, though they were one of the greatest centre-back couples this club has ever had.”

It’s safe to say Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers would be happy if Skrtel and Agger could follow in the footsteps of their illustrious predecessors, but he may feel it wiser to concentrate on getting his side to turn their stuttering form around and start climbing the league table first.

Carragher is still at the club, though his involvement at first team level has vastly reduced, and so any tips for the pair can come straight from source.

Liverpool’s turnaround in fortunes may have begun last weekend when they picked up their first Premier League home win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Reading.

Whether this is true or not remains to be seen, but it will not be easy to continue the run when the next opponents they face are big spending Russian side Anzhi Makachkala.
