Arsenal set for Serie ‘A’ fight over Serbian international

Arsenal face competition from Inter Milan in the race to sign Serbian international defender Dusan Basta, according to reports.

Italian website TMW cite newspaper Sportske when claiming that the Nerazurri are keen on adding the 28-year-old right back to their squad at the San Siro.

However, the report also states that Udinese are unlikely to do business with any club in January, meaning a transfer for the five-cap international would have to wait until the end of the current campaign.

Arsenal was first linked with a move for the player at the end of September, with manager Arsene Wenger reportedly considering Basta as a potential replacement for Bacary Sagna if the Frenchman fails to sign a new deal at the Emirates Stadium.

The Belgrade-born full-back has versatility on his side however, originally starting his professional career as a right midfielder before slotting back into defence.

That means that, were Sagna to pen a new deal with the Gunners, Wenger could still look to add the Red Star Belgrade youth team product.

But, with the interest from Italy, the Arsenal boss will know he faces a battle if he wants to bring Basta to the Premier League.
