Manchester City are close to bringing former-Barcelona director of football Txiki Begiristain to the club, according to the Daily Mail.

The 48-year-old is reportedly set to join another ex-Barca employee, Ferran Soriano, at the Etihad Stadium. Soriano was wanted by Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea, while Begiristain is thought to be a target for Chelsea and Tottenham.

But the report suggests the former-Barca chief is close to joining the Premier League champions. Manchester City are looking to re-organise their staff behind the scenes, and it is thought Begiristain will take up a technical director role, while the Manchester club will also attempt to bring in former Johan Cruyff adviser Joan Patsy.

The Daily Mail reports Begiristain is a close friend of ex-Barca boss Pep Guardiola, and speculate the potential appointment could pave the way for the Spaniard to replace Roberto Mancini at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola is currently on a year-long break from football after resigning from Barcelona, but the ex-Spain international has been linked with Chelsea, AC Milan and Bayern Munich.

Begiristain spent seven years at the Nou Camp from 2003 to 2010, and the former-Barca midfielder was the key player behind deals for Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto'o and Dani Alves, while overseeing the prolific youth academy, La Masia.
