Lionel Messi scored twice for Barcelona in an emphatic 5-0 victory at Rayo Vallecano.

The brace from the diminutive Argentine also took his career tally to 300 as the Blaugrana moved clear at the top of the La Liga table.

Spanish striker David Villa opened the scoring for the visitors, breaking the deadlock with the only goal in the first-half.

Messi doubled his side’s advantage three minutes into the second period, but Barca didn’t have everything their own way and failed to build on that lead until the final ten minutes.

Xavi Hernandez and Cesc Fabregas both got in on the goalscoring act in the closing stages however, before Messi reached his landmark with just a minute left on the clock.

Atletico Madrid will get the chance to go level at the top once again tonight (Sunday) however, when they face Osasuna.
