Andre Villas-Boas says he is so delighted with Tottenham’s win over Southampton yesterday that he will pay for the shirts his players gave to the travelling supporters after the game at St. Mary’s.

Spurs made their way into the top four for the first time this season with a hard-fought win over Southampton, with goals from Gareth Bale and Clint Dempsey ensuring they ended a two game winless streak.

The north London club held off a second half charge by the home side to secure the win, with some Spurs players thanking the travelling support by throwing their match shirts in to the crowd.

Villas-Boas said afterwards that he didn’t mind his players showing their appreciation to the club’s fans, and joked he would pay for them out of his own pocket.

“I told them I would pay for the shirts! It was important for the fans and a massive win for the players," he said after the game.

“It’s such a good win. We want to be at the top, we want to make the best of fixtures at Southampton and Wigan before we play Man City and Arsenal.

“If we carry on showing this level of competence we can really push on.”

The Portuguese boss also expressed his delight at Bale’s scoring return to the Spurs team against his former club having missed the games against Chelsea and Maribor.

“I’m extremely happy for Gareth. He’s a massive player for us and when the small opportunities come he makes the difference.”

The Welshman himself said he was happy to have helped Spurs win upon his return, but was keen not to disrespect his former club.

It was a bit emotional scoring but the main theme was to come here and do a job. My celebration was muted out of respect for Southampton.”
