Lionel Messi has been awarded the Golden Shoe for the second time in his career after finishing as the leading goalscorer in Europe last season.

The Barcelona forward scored an astonishing 50 goals in La Liga – four more than rival Cristiano Ronaldo managed – to secure the prize which was handed to him in a ceremony in Barcelona yesterday.

The Argentinian international, who also broke Gerd Muller’s 40 year-old record by smashing 73 goals in all competitions last season, is currently eyeing Pele’s record of most goals in a single calendar year.

Speaking after being handed the award the 25-year-old remained typically humble and thanked his Barcelona team-mates for their efforts in helping him reach a half-century of goals.

"This is a group prize," he told Barca's official website. "I always say that when an individual wins something like this.

"That's a fact, and this one more than any. It is a prize for scoring goals, but I'd never have done it without my team-mates."

Messi could soon claim a historic fourth consecutive Ballon D’Or – a feat that has never been achieved before. However standing in his way is old rival Cristiano Ronaldo, gunning for his second world player of the year award.

Radamel Falcao and Andres Iniesta will also be in the mix for the prestigious prize, while the Premier League is represented by Wayne Rooney, Mario Balotelli, Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and Robin van Persie.

For some pretty compelling evidence as to why Messi is head and shoulders above the rest however, check out all 50 league goals the great man scored last season below.
