Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has heaped praise on Ryan Giggs after another vintage display in the 5-4 defeat to Chelsea in the League Cup fourth round.

The 38-year-old midfielder opened the scoring at Stamford Bridge last night (Wednesday), and scored a second from the penalty spot in extra-time in what turned out to be a disappointing night for the Red Devils.

Ferguson was quick to find a positive in the performance of Giggs however, with the veteran rolling back the years once again with a composed performance in the centre of the pitch.

"I think some of our football was terrific. I think in Ryan Giggs, we saw a player of unbelievable proportions, in terms of playing the 120 minutes at 39 years of age next month and it's a credit to himself,” Ferguson told SkySports post-match.

“It's an example to every player on the pitch, even the Chelsea players."

Ferguson was less complimentary about Luis Nani post-match, admitting that the Portuguese winger had the chance to secure a United victory at 3-2 in normal time had he been more sensible with the ball.

As it were, Nani gave away possession, and Chelsea won a penalty which Eden Hazard scored to send the game into extra-time.

"He (Nani) is experienced but he is an individual. He is a player who wants to beat a man and we are not going to discourage him from that but in that situation, if we had kept the ball in the corner flag, the game was over,” Ferguson continued.

"They are at home, you expect them to attack and they did that. With our history and the way we attack, we always want to win so you're always going to get an open game, I think."

Manchester United will hope to bounce back immediately in their next Premier League match, which sees Arsenal make the trip to Old Trafford on Saturday.
