Arsenal poised to lose Colombian teen transfer batte with Barcelona

Arsenal are set to lose out to Barcelona in the race to sign 14-year-old Colombian winger Giancarlo Poveda.

The teenage talent was thought to be close to signing for the Gunners after spending a number of weeks with the club’s academy, according to The Daily Mail, but Barca boss Tito Vilanova has stepped-in to take the player across to Spain.

Poveda played for Barcelona’s youth team in a friendly against Jabac on Tuesday, and the La Liga giants are now ‘confident’ the former Puerto Malagueno starlet will commit to the Blaugrana.

It’s not the first time Arsenal and Barcelona have gone head-to-head over a young player, with Cesc Fabregas the highest profile to choose north London over Catalonia despite his roots at the club.

Arsene Wenger was also able to lure Hector Bellerin and Jon Toral to the Emirates Stadium last year – two signings that still upset the Nou Camp hierarchy, according to the report.

However, Barca now appear set to get their own back on the Arsenal boss, with the probable signing described as a ‘retaliatory blow’.
