Chelsea have identified France international Loic Remy as their main Janaury transfer target as they consider alternatives to Radamel Falcao.

According to the Daily Star, Chelsea have shelved plans to bid for the Colombian international after Atletico Madrid informed the Blues anything less than £40m for Falcao would not be considered.

The Stamford Bridge side have been linked with a January move for the £46m-rated Atletico Madrid striker, but the report suggests Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has pulled the plug on financing a move for the Colombian.

Instead, Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo has put forward Marseille striker Loic Remy as a possible option for January, and the Frenchman is available for much less, around £25m, according to the report.

Chelsea have just two senior strikers, Fernando Torres and Danny Sturridge, following the departure of Didier Drogba over the summer.

Di Matteo is expected to try and strengthen in January, with a number of targets put forward as possible Stamford Bridge additions.

But interest in Remy is likely to be high when the transfer window reopens. The Frenchman has struggled for form at Marseille this season, and has missed out on playing time through injury.

Andre Pierre Gignac has established himself as the club's main striker, and although he is currently injured, Remy could be tempted to move elsewhere if first-team football is not forthcoming.

The report claims Arsenal and Tottenham are interested in the France international, who can operate through the middle or on the wing.

Spurs have Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe as their main striker options, but Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas is likely to be active during the transfer window.

Still, European champions Chelsea could look to beat their London rivals to the punch. The Stamford Bridge side are expected to sign a striker in January, although the amount they spend could be dependent on whether Danny Sturridge leaves.
