Liverpool play down £8m England winger link
Liverpool transfer news: Theo Walcott wanted in £8million move from Arsenal
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has played down talk of a potential January bid for Arsenal winger Theo Walcott.
The Reds chief was forced to deny the speculation during his pre-match press conference earlier today (Friday), with overnight reports linking the Merseyside giants with an £8 million move for the 23-year-old.
Rodgers was straight to the point in his response to journalists however, and was not willing to discuss non-Liverpool players in detail – as has been his policy in the past.
"There's nothing in it. He's an Arsenal player,” Rodgers is quoted as saying by talkSPORT.
The Daily Mail claimed late on Thursday that Walcott could be heading for the exit door at the Emirates Stadium, having rejected a five-year, £75,000-a-week offer from the Gunners.
The report went on to claim that Liverpool were willing to accommodate the former Southampton starlet's desire to play in a more central role, as well as guaranteeing the 28-cap England international more first team opportunities.
Arsene Wenger has set the player a Christmas deadline to agree a new deal in north London, and if terms can’t be reached, then Arsenal will have to sell for a cut-price fee in January or lose the player for nothing at the end of the season.
Liverpool, who are short of options up-front, were said to have seen an opportunity to bolster their ranks in the New Year, but Rodgers’ comments suggest this particular player won’t be moving to Anfield anytime soon.
