Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the Red Devils’ latest defensive injury blow on Friday – Nemanja Vidic will be out for at least another month.

The Old Trafford club’s captain missed the second half of last season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury during the embarrassing Champions League exit to Swiss side Basel.

Manchester United had already been missing the Serbian centre-back for six weeks when he was forced to have further surgery on the same knee following complaints of stiffness after a training session.

The expected lay-off after the surgery on meniscus damage was estimated to be eight weeks, but Ferguson has now confirmed Vidic suffered a setback in his recovery, possibly a further six weeks.

“I think we're talking around December for Vidic, maybe around Christmas time,” the Scot told reporters ahead of his side’s clash with Arsenal at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The further loss of Vidic is a blow for Manchester United, as their defence has been leaking too many goals for Ferguson’s liking recently.

It is all not all bad news, however, as young defender Chris Smalling is closing on a first team return after three months out with a broken foot.
