The highly-rated 23-year-old was unable to get the relevant paperwork processed to complete a switch to the Premier League, and has ended up plying his trade in France's top-flight.
A full international with Burkina Faso, Traore first arrived in Ligue 1 when he signed for Auxerre in 2005 following an unsuccessful trial with Manchester United.
He enjoyed seven successful years in Burgundy before moving on to Lorient last summer, after Auxerre were relegated to Ligue 2.
Reflecting on his career to date, Traore insists he is happy with the way things have turned out, appreciating that it would have been difficult to make the breakthrough at Old Trafford.
"During my month in Manchester I played one match and all of the professionals watched us and I met with Alex Ferguson. Of course I wanted to stay, but there was a problem with my work permit."
Traore was just 16 at the time of his trial with the Premier League giants, and looking back he says that things perhaps turned out for the best.
"I would have had to be sent on loan to Belgium for six months and my mother refused. She preferred Auxerre."
