Monk slams Fernando Torres £50m price tag

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres was overpriced and didn’t get a yard in the match against Swansea City on Saturday afternoon.

This is according to Swans defender Garry Monk, who was marking Torres for much of the 1-1 draw and kept the Spain international quiet in another below par performance.

Monk claimed the £50million Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich paid Liverpool for Torres was probably too much, but he insisted that the 28-year-old was not the only player who had too large a transfer fee.

“He clearly has quality, but there are hundreds of players overpriced,” Monk is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

“That is not his fault, that Chelsea paid that sort of money for him. He will feel that on his shoulders.”

Torres had a promising start to the season and had scored four Premier League goals by the beginning of October, as the news combination of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar shone at Stamford Bridge, providing many scoring opportunities.

However, the past four weeks have seen Torres revert back to the listlessness that pervaded for much of last season and has been ineffective during a dip in form for Roberto di Matteo’s side as a whole.

They will have the chance to get back on track and gain some revenge on Wednesday, as Shakhtar Donetsk visit in the Champions League, having defeated the Blues in their last European fixture.

Meanwhile Swansea's success since being promoted is perhaps best displayed by Monk's comparison of himself with Torres.

"I came here on a free when we were in League Two, and he’s cost £50 million. That's what you're dealing with, We're living in different worlds."
