Liverpool have reportedly been joined by Zenit St Petersburg in their pursuit of Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta.
Liverpool have been linked with the Venezuela international for some time, and were reportedly priced out of a move for Amorebieta during the summer transfer window.
However, according to talkSPORT, Amorebieta could now be available for around £8 million, although Liverpool will not have a free run in the race to sign the 27-year-old.
Along with Liverpool, Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg and Serie A side Roma have both been credited with interest in the Athletic Bilbao star, with the latter reported to be considering a January transfer window bid.
Zenit, however, have already made contact with Athletic Bilbao over a proposed New Year move and, given their financial clout, are surely now ahead of Liverpool and Roma in the queue to sign Amorebieta.
Missing out on Amorebieta may not prove to be too much of a concern for Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, with reinforcements up front - rather than in defence - a January priority.
Liverpool have just Luis Suarez as their only fit senior striker at present, with the summer departures of Andy Carroll and Dirk Kuyt leaving the Anfield club light int he goalscoring department.
