Alex McLeish has ruled himself out of the running to return to the Scotland manager's job but has thrown his weight behind the appointment of Gordon Strachan.

The Scottish Football Association board dismissed Craig Levein as national team boss on Monday "primarily due to the disappointing results in the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 Qualifiers".

However McLeish, out of a job since being sacked at Aston Villa at the end of last season, told talkSPORT: "I left the national team to take up club football. I felt I was missing the day-to-day stuff. I wouldn't like to be unfair to Scotland fans in terms of coming back to the job and being a hypocrite."
