Chelsea & Barcelona face competition for defender

Published 1 Comments

Chelsea and Barcelona could see their respective chases for Udinese defender Mehdi Benatia derailed by interest from Juventus.

The Moroccan international is being tracked by Chelsea boss Roberto di Matteo and Camp Nou manager Tito Vilanova but will now have to contend with interest from the Serie A champions, according to talkSPORT.

The Stamford Bridge club currently have an abundance of central defenders, but 25-year-old Benatia could be seen as a promising signing that they could integrate into the first team over an extended period.

Barcelona have fitness worries in their defence, using central midfielders as cover has become more frequent, and the report claims they have highlighted Benatia as a possible remedy to these woes.

However, Vilanova and Di Matteo will find it even tougher to land their man as the report claims Juventus are putting together a package worth £10million to offer in January.

Juve have a history of doing business with Udinese, having signed Chilean defender Mauricio Isla and Ghanaian midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah in the summer.
