Ashley Cole has been ruled out of Chelsea's crunch Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk this evening, after picking up a hamstring injury in Saturday's Premier League draw at Swansea.

Juan Mata and David Luiz are both expected to shake off knocks that sidelined them at the weekend, while club captain John Terry should return to lead Roberto Di Matteo's side out at Stamford Bridge after completing his four-match domestic ban.

Frank Lampard is the only notable absentee, with the midfielder missing because of the calf injury he picked up in the reverse fixture - a 2-1 defeat against Shakhtar - last time out.

The Blues will be looking to get the defence of their European crown back on track as they seek revenge against the Ukrainian Premier League champions on Wednesday evening, and aim to avoid being the first holders in the tournament's history to be dumped out at the group stage.

Predicted Chelsea starting XI:

Cech; Ivanovic, Terry, Luiz, Bertrand; Mikel, Romeu; Mata, Oscar, Hazard; Torres.
