Liverpool will have to contend with some big spenders out of Russia if they want to land defensive target Fernando Amorebieta.
Brendan Rodgers has been linked with a January move for the Venezuelan, whose talks over an extension to his contract have stalled, but it now appears Zenit St Petersburg and another, unnamed, Russian club have moved for him.
The Athletic Bilbao centre-back has reportedly been a target for the Anfield club for some time, but the Liverpool coffers weren’t up to the staggering £26milllion release clause in his contract.
Now Amorebieta’s agent has revealed the club that recently purchased Brazilian forward Hulk from Porto and Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel from Benfica have approached him over a possible move.
“There are many options in Russia, as Zenit and another club have made an offer,” said Gines Carvajal to izveztia.ru - a Russian news website.
“There are also some Italian and English clubs interested, but for the moment we are waiting to talk to Athletic.”
Liverpool will struggle to keep up with the Russian champions if signing Amorebieta became a bidding war, as they splashed a whopping £64million to land Hulk and Witsel.
Rodgers does not have this kind cash at his disposal and will be hoping the lure of Anfield could persuade the 27-year-old to opt against the more lucrative options in Russia.
