Tottenham secured their first Europa League victory of the season thanks to a Jermain Defoe hat-trick, earning the hosts a 3-1 victory over Slovenian champions Maribor at White Hart Lane.

The win lifts Spurs to second spot in Group J following three successive draws, leaving them two points behind leaders Lazio, who won 3-0 against Panathinaikos last night.

Liverpool's trip to Russia resulted in a 1-0 defeat against Anzhi Makhachkala in Group A, while the only other Premier League participants, Newcastle United maintained top spot, as they came back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw away at Club Brugge in Group D.

In the other Group A clash, Swiss side Young Boys claimed a shock 3-2 victory away at Udinese, and in Group B, holders Atletico Madrid lost 2-0 to Academica. Viktoria Plzen thrashed Hapoel Tel Aviv 4-0.

Joey Barton scored directly from a corner to help Ligue 1 side Marseille to a 2-2 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach in Group C, and Fenerbahce won 2-0 against AEL. Meanwhile, Bordeaux stay second behind Newcastle in Group D, following their 1-0 victory over bottom-placed Maritimo in France.

Group E saw Steaua Bucharest win 2-1 away at Molde, and Stuttgart beat Copenhagen 2-0 in Denmark. AIK defeated PSV Eindhoven in Group F, while Edinson Cavani scored four times in Napoli's 4-2 demolition of Dnipro.

Basel beat Videoton 1-0 in Group G, while Sporting Lisbon and Racing Genk played out a 1-1 draw. Group H saw away victories for Inter Milan and Rubin Kazan, who won 2-1 and 1-0 against Partizan Belgrade and Neftchi Baku.
