Manchester City target Daniele De Rossi has given AS Roma another reason to sell him in January, after the petulant Italian's latest red card in the Serie A derby defeat against Lazio on Sunday.
The 29-year-old midfielder was sent off after swinging his arm at the face of Lazio captain Stefano Mauri, leaving Roma a man light for 45minutes of a game they were already trailing at the Stadio Olimpico.
Erik Lamela gave the hosts the lead, before two quick-fire goals from Antonio Candreva and Miroslav Klose swung the game in the visitors' favour. Cue De Rossi's moment of madness, just seconds after the restart, and then Mauri compounded Roma's agony when he pounced on a defensive mistake to put Lazio 3-1 up.
Miralem Pjanic scored a speculative, long-range free-kick in stoppage-time, but it wasn't enough for the Giallorossi, who surrendered defeat against their rivals. So, what next for De Rossi?
The Italy international spent much of last season refusing to publicly commit himself to the club he has served for his entire career, and despite his new contract tying him to Roma until 2017, there was a get-out clause allowing him to leave for a better deal in the summer.
Roberto Mancini has tried long and hard to lure De Rossi to the Etihad Stadium, and hoped that the Citizens' Premier League title success would convince him to say goodbye to his homeland.
Fresh reports and speculation about De Rossi's future came about after he told the press following Roma's 4-1 defeat at Juventus that Zdenek Zeman's squad was not good enough to challenge for the title, putting further pressure on his relationship with his manager.
