Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has beaten Real Madrid counterpart Cristiano Ronaldo to yet another individual award, after the Argentine was voted the Liga de Fútbol Profesional's player of the season for 2011-12.
Messi and Ronaldo were both in phenomenal goalscoring form last term, with the former finding the net 50 times in La Liga for Barcelona and the latter scoring 46 league goals for Real Madrid.
Ronaldo had the satisfaction of winning the title with Real Madrid for the first time since his arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu last season, but Messi has had the last laugh again in the individual stakes.
Messi won the LFP award thanks to votes from his fellow professionals, with the choices of players and coaches across Spain's top two divisions contributing towards the destination of the trophy.
The LFP award makes it a hat-trick for Messi, who has won the crown in every year since its inception, while he has also been named the best forward in La Liga three times running.
Messi was named the winner ahead of Ronaldo in second place, while the Portuguese's Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema polled the third most votes.
Also among the winners were former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, who beat Jose Mourinho to the manager of the year award, and Malaga star Isco who took home the breakthrough talent gong.
Messi and Ronaldo, meanwhile, are now expected to go head-to-head in pursuit of the 2012 Ballon d'Or, with the Barcelona man looking to record an historic fourth triumph.
