Paris Saint Germain star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has lavished praise on Steven Gerrard ahead of their meeting on Wednesday.
The former Barcelona, Inter and AC Milan striker commended the Liverpool and England captain for his loyalty to the Anfield club.
Ibrahimovic and Gerrard will come face to face when the Three Lions travel to Stockholm for a friendly, and it is likely to be an amiable affair if the former’s comments are anything to go by.
"I think Steven Gerrard is a fantastic player. He has been loyal to his club, he has won some big trophies with the club. He always plays at a high level when he is not injured,” he said ahead of the clash.
Ibrahimovic’s admiration of Gerrard’s loyalty will come as a surprise to some, as the Swede has amassed a bigger total of accumulated transfer fees than any other player in history, so you could be excused for imagining loyalty is notr a quality that features high on his list of virtues.
However, this was not the only reason PSG’s top scorer gave to back up the Anfield legend’s apparent greatness, he also claimed his style and touch were more typical of a player developed outside of the traditional English set-up.
“He is a very good person to have as a team-mate in your team. He always gives 200 per cent, is a good fighter and has good skills and a good touch with the ball also,” he added.
“He feels more like an international player rather than a normal English player.
“English players have big hearts, always fighting, very aggressive, but for me Gerrard feels more international. He has more skills than the normal player.”
The Liverpool man’s participation in Wednesday’s friendly was in some doubt at the start of the week, as he required a scan on his knee due to feared ligament damage.
It turned up clear, however, and Gerrard now looks set to captain the side in what will be his 100th England cap.
