La Liga expert and former-Northern Ireland international striker Gerry Armstrong believes a Radamel Falcao and Fernando Torres partnership at Chelsea would be 'something special.'

Speaking on talkSPORT radio, the former-Tottenham Hotspur forward claimed Falcao is currently the 'best number nine in the world', and advised Chelsea to sign the Colombian international.

Chelsea have been linked with the £48m-rated Atletico Madrid striker, but many reports suggest Falcao would be purchased as a direct replacement for the Fernando Torres.

The Spaniard was signed from Liverpool in a £50m deal in Janaury 2011, but has failed to replicate his best form at Stamford Bridge. Torres has looked sharper this season, hitting seven goals in 18 appearances, but speculation has mounted Roberto Di Matteo could be looking for alternatives in the January transfer window.

But Armstrong, who spent two years in La Liga with Real Mallorca, believes Chelsea should splash out for Falcao and partner him up front with Torres.

With Falcao likely to cost at least £48m, a Falcao-Torres strike pairing would be one of the most expensive in history. Torres started his career at Atletico Madrid, captaining the club aged 19. Sergio Aguero, now of Manchester City, replaced the Chelsea striker at Atletico when Torres first moved to England in 2007, and when Aguero swapped Madrid for Manchester in 2011, Falcao was signed from Porto as Aguero's replacement.

Recent reports have suggested Chelsea have opened negotiations with Atletico Madrid for the Colombian, and the Blues are thought to have offered the Ballon d'Or contender a contract to join the Stamford Bridge club.

Only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have scored more La Liga goals than Falcao since he joined Atletico from Porto in a £37m deal in the summer of 2011.
