Brad Friedel says he is more than happy to fight with Hugo Lloris for the right to be Tottenham’s number 1 goalkeeper this season.

The American has been largely preferred in goal this season to the Frenchman, who arrived over the summer from Lyon in a deal worth around £12 million.

However Friedel was forced to sacrifice his record of 310 consecutive league appearances after he was dropped for Lloris in Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa last month, while the 25-year-old has also been used in cup competitions, most notably the Europa League.

France manager Didier Deschamps has been vocal in his criticism of Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas’ decision to keep Friedel in goal, while some reports have even suggested Lloris was willing to leave White Hart Lane in January if his situation doesn’t improve.

Friedel insists it is a fair competition between himself and Lloris along with Tottenham’s other two goalkeepers Carlo Cudicini and Heurelho Gomes for the No.1 jersey, and says he won't do anything different to retain his spot between the posts.

“No, nothing different to the way in which the two great goalkeepers we already had on the books in Carlo Cudicini and Heurelho Gomes were doing so all last season,” he told the Times of India.

"We have four very good goalkeepers here at the club and we know that there is competition for places between all of us."

The 41-year-old also insists that he has no hard feelings about Lloris ending his record run in goal, and says he didn’t take the decision personally.

"I think at that stage I was just more proud of the achievement than anything – it's not a small amount of games!" he added.

"At the same time though, I knew I was still fit and there was no feeling whatsoever that my career was over. It was just a case of backing the players on the field and I was happy we got the result against Aston Villa by winning 2-0."
