Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao has praised Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola, and insisted he would not be worried about the physicality of the Premier League.

The Colombian international is reportedly Chelsea's transfer priority for the January transfer window, and, according to the Daily Mail, Stamford Bridge owner Roman Abramovich is ready to give up on under-fire striker Fernando Torres and move for Falcao.

The report claims Abramovich is prepared to admit his £50m Torres deal has not worked out, and is now ready to sanction a move for the £48m-rated Atletico forward.

And Falcao has stoked speculation, admitting he's impressed by the European champions' ambitions and revealing he was a huge fan of Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola as a kid.

Falcao said: "Chelsea are champions of Europe and there is not much more to say than that. Even after winning the Champions League they still go and sign players of the highest quality. Their ambition is clear.

"I would not be worried about the physical aspect of the Premier League. I have scored goals in Argentina, Portugal and now Spain. I am confident I can adapt my game to any league. I would welcome the challenge of the Premier League.

"I was also a big fan of Gianfranco Zola when I was growing up. I have watched the Premier League for a long time. There is so much quality and it is such an exciting league. Of course it is nice to think I might play in it."

The Colombia sensation has a £48m release clause inserted into his Atletico contract, and the report suggests financial difficulties could force Atletico to sell their star asset in January.

But Chelsea are thought to be willing to wait until summer to land their main man, although interest from Manchester City and Real Madrid could force their hand earlier.

Chelsea splashed out in the summer to surround Torres with quality providers, and while the Spaniard has improved on last season's dismal performances, he is still yet to find his best form.

And the comparison with Falcao's record since 2011 is telling. Since January 2011 - the month Torres joined Chelsea - Torres has scored 19 goals in 85 games.

In contrast, Falcao has scored 67 goals in 71 games for Atletico Madrid and Porto.
