Pires: Trophy must be Arsenal's top priority

Arsenal legend Robert Pires claims winning a trophy should be of a greater importance to the club's fans and players than qualification for the Champions League.

The Gunners are without any silverware since their FA Cup triumph over Manchester United seven years ago and look unlikely to mount a challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Arsenal have endured their worst start to a season in 30 years and are currently 11 points off the pace in league, and a first title since 2004 is merely a distant dream.

A place in the top four has now been outlined as Arsenal's key objective this term, but Pires feels the club need to focus on winning a trophy of some kind, rather than merely settling for a fourth place finish.

Pires, who won five major trophies during six years with Arsenal, believes triumphing in a competition such as the FA Cup or Capital One would instil a winning mentality that has been absent for a number of years at the Emirates Stadium.

"We all know the view on this subject varies between fans, players and managers," Pires told talkSPORT.

"On the one side you have Wenger telling fans that Champions League qualification is a trophy, and economically he is right.

"But the most important thing for fans and players is winning titles, be it the FA Cup, the League Cup or the Champions League.

"So on the one hand Wenger is right, but he is also wrong. To fans and players, we know what matters most, and that’s winning trophies.

"The league title [challenge] is over. It’s November and Arsenal are 11 points behind Manchester United and that’s too much. That leaves the Champions League, which I think a Spanish team will win, so that leaves the FA Cup and the Capital One Cup which Arsenal can.

"It’s been years without a trophy and I know that is very frustrating for Wenger. That should be the number one priority this year."
