Chelsea boss Roberto di Matteo has admitted ‘any manager’ would want to sign Radamel Falcao if they could – and hailed the Atletico Madrid forward as one of the best in the world.
Chelsea have been heavily linked with a January swoop for Falcao, who has a €60 million release cluase in his contract.
Stories this week have also suggested that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has lost patience with £50 million acquisition Fernando Torres and could be ready to replace the Spaniard with Falcao.
The Stamford Bridge club could face competition from Manchester City for the Colombian forward’s signature, although Atletico insist they don’t need to sell up despite their financial troubles.
Di Matteo will likely look to the January transfer window to add to his forward line, with Torres and Sturridge currently his only options in attack.
He added: "He is one of the best strikers, probably, in European and world football.
"His ratio of goals per game is quite impressive, not just this season but over the last three seasons, at Porto and Atletico Madrid."
Chelsea are set to lose Nigerian internationals John Obi-Mikel and Victor Moses in January to the African Cup of Nations, and Di Matteo admitted that may also spur them on to act in the transfer window.
"We're looking at that, because we'll lose Victor and John Obi Mikel for that tournament," he commented.
"We'll look and see how we deal with it, but for the moment we're okay."
