Chelsea are considering a bid for Fiorentina midfielder Adem Ljajic, who was rejected by Manchester United in a last minute u-turn and involved in a punch up with his former manager.

A report by calciomercato.com claims Stamford Bridge scouts had been watching the 21-year-old’s team-mate, Stevan Jovetic, but were soon impressed by Ljajic’s talents, prompting Roman Abramovich to consider bankrolling a move.

Ljajic was supposed to sign for Manchester United in 2009 from Partizan Belgrade in a double transfer with Zoran Tosic – the deal was even announced by the club, with Tosic joining immediately and Ljajic moving a year later.

However, United eventually pulled out of the reported £10million deal for the then 18-year-old, with the Old Trafford club stating work permit issues as the reason and Partizan claiming a financial crisis at the Premier League club.

Ljajic then joined Fiorentina and became famous last season for being attacked by his manager Delio Rossi after reacting badly to being substituted.

Rossi was sacked shortly afterwards and Ljajic has been trying to get his career back on track since, with some success.

He has been finding more regular playing time under current coach Vincenzo Montella and with promising results, which could be behind Chelsea’s reported interest.

Roberto di Matteo has an abundance of young, diminutive attacking midfielder’s, so a move may not materialise anytime soon, though Ljajic is certainly one to be watching for the future.
