Liverpool are being linked with a shock raid on Reading defender Alex Pearce.

The 24-year-old centre back was rising through the ranks at the Majdeski Stadium when Reds boss Brendan Rodgers was at the club, giving the former Scotland youth international his senior debut for the Royals.

But, after helping Reading to promotion from the Npower Championship last season, Pearce has fallen down the pecking order in November, with manager Brian McDermott opting for Sean Morrison and Kaspars Gorkss in the weekend win over Everton.

That could leave the door open for a move away from the Berkshire outfit, with the Merseyside giants ready to add the player to strengthen their defence, according to The Daily Mirror.

Jamie Carragher, Martin Skrtel, Sebastian Coates and Daniel Agger are the current options for the Liverpool chief in central defence, although Swedish international Andreas Granqvist has also been linked with a move to Anfield in recent weeks.

And now Pearce is reported to be on the club’s radar, as Liverpool look to sustain a challenge for European places in the Premier League this season.
