Real Madrid duo Alvaro Arbeloa and Aitor Karanka have come out in defence of Cristiano Ronaldo, and insist the winger is happy with life at the club.

The Portuguese superstar helped his side to an emphatic 5-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, not getting on the scoresheet personally but creating a number of chances for his teammates.

Arbeloa played down the significance of a lack of goals for his Los Blancos colleague however, insisting the former Manchester United star simply saves his best moments for the big games.

"It is rare that he doesn't net in a game where we score five goals, but that does not matter,” Arbeloa told AS, according to FourFourTwo Australia.

“He saves goals for when we need them more than we did today. He has made it clear many times that he is happy here and that he is at the best club in the world, which is where a player like him has to be."

Assistant manager Karanka echoed the sentiments of the full-back, and insists that Ronaldo has nothing to prove to anyone at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"Cristiano never needs to prove himself, at least not to us. We know him well enough. We have talked lots of times about what Cristiano means to us and we know how important he is,” he told a press conference, according to Marca.

“He didn’t score today, but he provided assists, and was more generous than ever with the ball. He often sets out to engage in the game, and today he passed, opened up space and fought hard."

Jose Mourinho’s side currently sit third in the La Liga table, eight points behind league-leaders Barcelona and five behind local rivals Atletico Madrid.

‘The Special One’ will also need Ronaldo at his best in the Champions League this week, with Madrid needing victory at Manchester City to secure their place in the knockout stages.
