Arsenal have emerged as the favourites to sign Schalke forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, according to former-Holland international striker Erik Meijer.
The Daily Mail reports the ex-striker turned TV pundit shares an agent, Arnold Oosterveer, with Huntelaar, and revealed he thinks the prolific Dutch striker will head to Arsenal when the transfer window reopens in January.
The 29-year-old former-Ajax, Real Madrid and AC Milan forward has scored in both Schalke's Champions League ties against the Gunners, and Arsene Wenger is thought to be keeping close tabs on his contract situation.
According to Meijer, the north London side are in pole position to secure the signature of Huntelaar.
"According to the information I have, Huntelaar will be gone in the winter," Meijer said in the Daily Mail. "Arsenal FC are the favourites to land him."
But Huntelaar has since played down speculation linking him with a move to the Emirates Stadium. After Schalke's Champions League match against Olympiakos this week the Dutchman said: "He obviously knows more than I know."
Huntelaar is out of contract at the end of the season, and has been linked with a number of clubs, several in the Premier League.
The report also suggests the Gunners are still looking to offload Moroccan international Marouane Chamakh. The former-Bordeaux striker has been linked with a return to his old club, but wages are proving to be a stumbling block, and the report suggest Arsenal may have to contribute.
