Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has joined the tributes to Sir Alex Ferguson to celebrate a statute of the Manchester United manager being unveiled at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo was unable to make it to the ceremony due to his commitments with Real Madrid, but sent a video message to his former Manchester United boss, who played a significant role in making him the player he is today.

"Well done boss, I think you deserve it 100 per cent," said Ronaldo, as reported by The Mirror. "I would like to be there with you but, as you know, my schedule is busy with training, games and so on.

"But I hope to see you soon because I need to practice my English, not my Scottish!"

Ronaldo was one of a number of Manchester United players past and present to congratulate Ferguson, who recently celebrated 26 years at Old Trafford, with former Real Madrid star David Beckham also sending his wishes.

Beckham was also unable to attend in person, but Ferguson was in the company of a number of illustrious players, with the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy, Eric Cantona and Ole Gunnar Solsakajer retiring to Manchester United for the occasion.

Ferguson has won 12 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies and five FA Cups - among several other major honours - during his time at Manchester United.
